A client just wrote to me:
“Sugar monster out today. Able to refuse it but having to use my willpower again. What’s up here?”
Do you sometimes feel that the Sugar Monster is trying everything to make you eat sugar?
Whether you have done the WildFit Challenge or some sort of calorie restriction or sugar detox, you know what I am talking about.
This can be really frustrating, and our self-esteem can take a hit because we feel like we have little willpower.
First I want to say that there is nothing wrong with you if you crave sugar. Craving sugar is in our DNA, and it has been vital for our survival.
Our ancestors were dependent upon excessive eating of fruit the build up the fat stores for the winter.
In nature sugar is scarce. Today we have an abundant amount of sugar available to us at all times. If you take a look at the food labels, you will find that most of the processed food has sugar in it.
Things You Can Do When The Sugar Monster is Raging
When we are in an unsupportive state, it is tough to think our way out of it. Do something that breaks your thought pattern. Here are some suggestions:
1. Don’t Get Hungry
There is a lot of reasons to not to get hungry. For example; Low blood sugar can affect our willpower negatively.
If we let our blood sugar drop, we are fueling the Sugar Monster and making it so much harder to resist.
I like to have Alkagizers (green smoothie) in the fridge, so I always have for backup, when I get hungry.
2. Meaningful Movements
The solution can be as simple as taking a walk. It is surprising how often a 10-minute walk can solve our mute the Sugar Monster.
Other examples of things you can try: Yoga, swimming, biking, sports, martial arts or put on some music and dance like no one is watching.
The main thing: MOVE!
3. Journaling
Journaling is another excellent way when you are frustrated or feeling stuck. You can read more about the power of journaling in a previous article.
4. Be Creative
Do something creative. Try drawing, painting, knitting, creative writing… The possibilities are endless. If you don’t know how to do something; search for a “How to” tutorial on youtube.
The main thing: HAVE FUN!
The next time you feel like surrendering for the Sugar Monster try one of the things mentioned above. If that does not work, try another.
Move your body and have fun!
